Our Sustainability Mission
At Filling Spaces, consciously making products is at the core of our business. Below we'll outline what makes our production process unique and thoughtful.
WE MANUFACTURE OUR PRODUCTS IN HOUSE
At Filling Spaces, we have our own manufacturing studio. This means that we eliminate the middlemen and have the opportunity to oversee every step of the production process directly. We aim to build long-lasting relationships with our artisans. Several of the artisans in our studio have been with us since we started Filling Spaces. This way of manufacturing is rare in India as most people work with vendors and export houses. Deepali grew up in India and worked in the fashion industry before moving to the US. She witnessed firsthand the poor working conditions in export houses and was committed to doing things differently.
OUR PRODUCTS ARE MADE TO ORDER
We don't keep back stock, and we only produce what's ordered. This way, we avoid sitting on excess inventory, and we drastically reduce our waste.
WE RE-PURPOSE EXCESS FABRIC THROUGH OUR KATRAN PROJECT
Any of our textiles with small flaws get re-purposed into new products by over-dyeing, often with natural, plant-based dyes. Also, any cut-offs from our production get patch-worked together to create new one-of-a-kind pillows. Shop our Katran Project here.
OUR TEXTILES ARE MADE BY HAND & SUPPORT THE CONTINUATION OF TRADITIONAL CRAFT TECHNIQUES
All of our ground clothes are woven by hand. This means that our fabrics are woven on foot-powered looms and do not require electricity or produce any pollution. Our Akriti collection is also woven by hand with naturally dyed wool. Also, our textiles are printed by hand with carved wooden blocks. With the advent of machine-woven and digitally printed fabric, the handloom and hand printing industries have seen a big decline. We are committed to supporting the continuation of traditional craft techniques because we value artisans and their skills and because we believe the character, beauty, and quality of products made by hand is unmatched.
WE USE NATURAL FABRICS & NON-TOXIC DYES
We use Linen, Cotton, Nettle, Ramie, and Wool fabrics primarily. We don't use any synthetic, petroleum-based fabrics. Also, we use non-toxic, AZO-free chemical dyes to print our patterns. We also use natural, plant-based dyes when possible.
POSITIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Our workspace in India is clean, healthy, and safe. We strongly believe in paying the artisan fairly and acknowledging the incredible skill, patience, and creativity that goes into their craft. We continuously strive to make a difference in our artisans' lives by supporting their kid's education, medical, and emergency needs. We also provide continuous, regular employment for our staff and training to provide women opportunities in vulnerable situations.
WE ARE COMMITTED TO GIVING BACK
In 2020, we used the proceeds from our sample sales to donate to causes important to our society, including Black Lives Matter and Red Cross for the Oregon and California Wildfires. We also recently introduced our Katran Project, our no-waste project, where all proceeds will go towards causes important to our society.
